Recently, California’s Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples can legally marry in that state. With the ruling, California joined Massachusetts as the only other state nationwide to recognize same-sex marriages. Currently, there’s a bill in New Jersey to consider partners to a civil union “married.” While the bill wouldn’t change same-sex couples’ rights extensively under that state’s laws, it would require employers to update their employment handbooks with an accurate definition of the term “spouse.”
Whether you’re located in one of these states or not, now is as good a time as any to review your existing benefits plans to determine whether offering same-sex benefits makes sense for your organization.
